A couple of things recently made me think about the times we live in.
The other day I wanted to cut out a couple of circular discs from plastic sheet, for my modelling. I remembered DGC’s thread on the Chimera ARV, so I looked it up. He said he used a Hollow Punch Set . So I Googled it and up came a site selling a nice 9 piece set, but it was out of stock. Now I have an Amazon account and wondered if they sell them, so I put the make in their search box and there it was. Tw clicks later, basket and checkout and it was ordered. Simples as they say. At this point I stopped and thought just how amazing that was. From deciding I needed something, which is an odd item, to ordering it was 10 minutes. I don’t even need to get out of my chair as it will arrive in the post in a couple of days.
The other thing was something Ian said whilst he was GM’ing our Victoriana game. He said he wasn’t even born in 1982, this in response to some random point I think Laurence made. Ian had also bought a Victoriana supplement online, sorry Chris. It was a list of equipment etc for the game. He had printed it out in full colour, over 100 pages of it. I thought I bet that used a lot of ink!
Anyway, these two totally different things got me thinking about how and what it was like back in 1982. Then there were no mobiles, no internet, in fact I think the best PC then was the Tandy 100. Back then if I had wanted to buy a Hollow Punch set I don’t think I could possibly found one to buy. Now I can get one in 10 minutes.
But, looking at the Victoriana gane we were playing, apart from the downloaded book, it was played in exactly the same way we did in 1982. Six of us around a table with Character Sheets, a selection of dice, Rule books some metal miniatures.
This has raised two questions in my mind, namely:
1. With all the advances in electronics and communication (Don’t even mention Twitter and Facebook as it is all a mystery to someone my age) aren’t we living in the most amazing of times. Isn’t this a much better time then 1982? Then Inflation was 10 to 12%, as were the Interest Rates. Today Inflation is only 3 to 4% and Interest Rates are practically nil. On top of that we have all the wonderful gadgets and the Internet, incredible. So is now better then 1982? You tell me!
2. Why have our games, however, stayed exactly the same! No gadgets, no change. Is this good or bad news?
By the way I want one of these new ipads, anyone want to buy me one?

I was wondering, mainly to myself, if these recessionary times have affected people more then we all realise.
Take this forum for instance, since April 2009 the number of posts has dropped dramatically. By July 2009 practically all posts, apart from by me and DGC, have stopped.
I know the recession started at the end of 2008, but it didn't really take hold until spring 2009.
So I wonder if the general feeling of gloom and depression has affected all those happy people who used to post here?
Are these really then sad days .
I'm not sad, the spring flowers will be out soon, then the long hot sunny days will follow, happy days indeed. Maybe even someone will post here again, I live in hope.
